Welcome to the course! We hope you find this unit both enriching and engaging as we explore the core principles of waste management. Throughout this journey, you will examine various solid waste streams and learn how to apply sustainable management practices that balance economic affordability, social acceptance, environmental effectiveness, and safety.
This unit covers local and regional waste streams, major waste generators, sources, characteristics, and environmental pollution. You will study methods for waste reduction at the source, health and safety issues, collection techniques, and resource recovery using the 4 R's. We will also dive into transport optimization, disposal and treatment methods—including composting, organic processing, energy recovery, thermal techniques, and landfilling—alongside integrated waste management and overarching policy frameworks.
A key focus will be on examining the policies, legal structures, and challenges surrounding waste management in the Solomon Islands and the broader region. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to design a practical, locally relevant waste management action plan tailored to your own community. We are excited to have you on board!
